P.M. Layne, physician and surgeon, Crawfordsville whose residence in Crawfordsville dates back to 1830 is the son of Elisha Layne, who came with his family to Montgomery County Nov 30, 1830. He began at farming and followed it as a business during the balance of his life. The Dr. now has in his possession some manuscript, a great part of it written by his father and some of his father's friends; some portions of it bear dates as early as 1751 and is still in a good state of preservation. The Dr. was born in 1827 and is a native of Ky. His early education was obtained, as he says, "in the woods."
At the age of 18, he began the study of Medicine and some time after put himself under the instruction of a physician. in 1855 he first began a regular practice by buying the office of his old tutor, Dr. SW Bennage, who had opened in 1847. SInce 1855 the Dr. has devoted his time to the practice of his profession.
His faith is of the eclectic school and he is a member of the Eclectic State Medical Soc. In 1847 he was made a member of the Masonic Order and has since filled the difference offices in the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch, Royal & Select Master and int he commandery. He is a member of Crawfordsville Commandery No 25. In 1856 he was married to Mineva J. Hughes, a native of Crawfordsville. Her people were among the earlier settlers of the place and her father built the first courthouse of the County. She died in 1875, leaving two sons and a daughter. He was married again in 1877 to Louisa Downing a native of Mich, though she had been a resident of Crawfordsville for some time prior to her marriage. The doctor has, by his close appplication and success in the practice of medicine, placed his name among the list of old & prominent physicians of the co. I wish to add to the above, that it gives me a genuine pleasure to record the presence among us of that prince of good fellows and nestor, disciple of Esculapus, Dr. PM Layne. This vernable silver beareded, public benefactor, while defying Father Time with a credit of 4 score hoary winters and then some, is as agile as a mountain ibex and as a 20 year old Adonis. He is delightfully reminscent and his brain is a magazine, rich in folk lore of pioneer times a connecting link with times when everybody knew every other body & went home with each other from church, and when selfishness had not poisoned the fountains of human happiness. Long may the good Dr. live to enjoy the garnered but immaterial assets of a life of good deeds and finally when the celestial boatman shall call he will answer "ready & waiting."
